“Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.” – Albert Schweitzer
Setting the example you want to see in your followers is an important element of transformational leadership, and has become one of the tenets of my personal approach to leadership over the years. Leadership and character education are a big part of life at King’s, so setting the example is crucial to the development of our young people.
I have been working with youth groups for over 15 years. Starting out as a cadet with 2348 (Maghull) Squadron Air Training Corps, I transitioned to being a CFAV taking on numerous roles such as Recruit Training Officer and Squadron Discipline before taking up a post at 146 (Northwich) Squadron.
Running alongside my existing Squadron duties I became a member of a number of training teams in Merseyside Wing. Delivery ranges from Cadet Non-Commissioned Officer Training, Leadership Courses and Drill & Ceremonial. More recently I have taken up a role with Wales and West Region as the Ceremonial Lead, being a point of contact for any Drill & Ceremonial queries throughout the region.
Being a product of the cadet system, I developed an interest in all things related to Adventure Training and Outdoor Education. As an outdoor leader, my credo of “Inform, Enthuse, Entertain” plays a big part in encouraging young people to enjoy and learn about the outdoors whilst being respectful of the delicate balance that exists between humans and nature.
In 2021, I did not hesitate for one moment when given the chance to join the Personal Development Team and help deliver high quality leadership and character education to our next generation leaders.
