Lois Martin

Practitioner of Geography

My passion for geography has grown throughout my life. When I was young I had a keen interest in the world around me, what was going on in the news and how things worked, regularly helping out on my family’s allotment. I strongly believe geography aids students to build a deeper understanding and connection with our planet and what is going on around them. The study of geography unpicks the interconnections between people and countries, develops research skills through understanding ecosystems and analyses the complexities of nature. It develops student’s skills for future career opportunities, but ultimately – the part I enjoy most – is seeing students spark an interest in a topic and bring that small part of geography home with them.

Geography can help students become successful and self-aware citizens in today’s society. My own studies have helped to aid my eco-conscious actions everyday. I achieved a BSc Geography from The University of Sheffield in which I focused my research on how technology (social media) can aid Tsunami warning systems and also how technology (GIS Systems) can aid in our understanding of periglacial features. I then went on to study at the University of Salford, Manchester and achieved an NCTJ and MA in Broadcast Journalism. My career took me to work for SKY News, Key 103, Bauer Media and the BBC, my interest remaining in telling stories with an environmental twist. This kept my desire to speak and educate others about geography alive and well.

My subject has delivered fantastic opportunities for me to travel the world. I’ve carried out research in the Mojave Desert, travelling three states in the USA, explored the jungles in Thailand and engulfed myself in the Buddhist culture and I’ve been in awe at the mid-Atlantic ridge where the earth is being torn in two in Iceland. Geography gave me the analytical mind and interpretation skills to truly open my eyes and enjoy these places for what they are.

After receiving a PGCE in Geography Secondary Education at Manchester Metropolitan University, I’ve worked in schools, including international schools, to motivate students to be excited and inspired by the world we live in. My aim here at King’s Leadership Academy, is to continue to educate and inspire students in my subject and plant the seed of intrigue about the world, that grows throughout student’s lives into the future.
