Benjamin Barker

Assistant Principal/Lead Practitioner of Science/Director of Quality Systems

From a very early age I have always had a passion for science and nature and it is this desire to understand the world we live in that led me to study at the University of Leeds. It is here I was able to gain an Honours degree in Biology as well as a Masters degree in Bioscience. I then moved to the University of Manchester where I received my Post Graduate Certificate in Education. After my first two years as a teacher I was promoted to Key Stage Four Science Coordinator, charged with ensuring the department created and maintained the right climate and culture to ensure every single one of our GCSE pupils reached their full potential as a young scientist.

I have had key roles on Deep Leadership Teams, one such role involved e-learning within the classroom – offering whole staff training to ensure we are effectively using new technologies within our lessons. Due to consistent ‘outstanding’ lessons observed by my line managers, HMI visits as well as Ofsted I was offered another role within the school, I was asked to help develop and lead whole school initiatives aimed at improving the quality of Teaching & Learning across all departments. I feel that these skills and experience will allow me to help Kings continue on its path to success.

I love sports and currently play American Football in Liverpool. I have been fortunate enough to represent my country’s Youth and Senior teams, taking part in competitive games and earning international caps at both levels. I am also a qualified coach and will be looking to start a Kings team where hopefully pupils will be able to realise their own dreams of representing a local team or even earning England or Great Britain caps as I did.

I am looking forward to starting at King’s this September. It is clear from what I have seen so far that this forward thinking school, with aspirational pupils, committed staff and a whole school determination to succeed is headed for great things.
