Melissa Alexander

Practitioner of History

History is an inescapable subject as it surrounds us in all that we do. History gives us insight into our origin, culture and significant events.  From a very early age I aspired to be a teacher. My historical curiosity developed throughout my school years where I was inspired by a tremendously outstanding teacher.

I began my teaching experience from a young age, whereby I had volunteered in primary schools throughout my school years teaching dance. In 2012 I worked in a summer camp in Windsor, New York, where I was a counsellor for the upper division of females. I was exposed to working alongside teenagers which I thoroughly enjoyed. Whilst studying Modern History at the University of Central Lancashire I was given the opportunity to do a placement module in my final year. I completed a placement at my old high school where I was given the opportunity to teach history to KS3 and KS4 students. This compelled me to apply to do my PGCE as I was certain teaching history in a high school was the perfect job for me. In 2016 I completed my Schools Direct training programme where I was awarded grade ‘Outstanding’ and a subject prize award.

I was enthralled by the character led values of King’s Leadership Academy and I fully support the ASPIRE values which King’s so passionately instills in all of its students. Every single student matters at King’s, and on a daily basis I am surrounded by extraordinary staff and students who strive to go above and beyond to demonstrate ‘credimus’. My primary goal is to add to the excellence of King’s and inspire students to develop their own historical curiosity. A recent project which I have been thrilled to be a part of is the local history project whereby our students are carrying out their own research project on the transition of Warrington in preparation for an exhibition.

In my spare time I enjoy travelling and experiencing different cultures. Most most recent trip was to Bali, Indonesia whereby I climbed a volcano and had breakfast with orangutans and elephants. I enjoy visiting historical sites and museums and expanding my historical knowledge. I love volunteering and feel this develops my own personal character to become the best individual possible.
