Mrs M Southern

Head of English

Having enjoyed and excelled at the study of English throughout my time at school and sixth form, my choice to enrol on an English Language course at the University of Leeds was a logical next step.  There I broadened my knowledge considerably, studying modules including language change, stylistics and phonetics.

After graduating with a 1st class honours degree in 2010, I began working as a teaching assistant at a school in Runcorn.  Finding great satisfaction and fulfilment in helping others to engage with English, I decided that I wanted to pursue a long term career in teaching and successfully applied for a place on the prestigious Teach First program in 2013.  I completed my training at a second school in Runcorn, qualifying with outstanding status.

Keen to develop myself further, I then began studying for a Masters in Education at the University of Manchester.  This was an endeavour that allowed me to engage with contemporary issues within the educational system, as well as providing opportunities to reflect on my own practice as a teacher and leader.

In my spare time, I enjoy travelling and have been lucky enough to visit some incredible places like China and Sri Lanka.  However, there are still countless places that I hope to experience in the future.  I also enjoy reading and my taste in books is wide-ranging, spanning classic literature and brand new releases of a variety of genres.

I am very excited to be part of the team at King’s; not only do I firmly believe that the school provides an exceptional education for all of its students, but its location in Woolston, where I went to primary and secondary school myself, adds a special, personal significance for me.
