Why study Spanish?

The curriculum vision for the Spanish department focuses on equipping students with the language skills and cultural knowledge necessary to communicate fluently in a second language. Learning foreign languages presents students with a valuable opportunity to boost their future prospects, confidence, and global awareness. Our curriculum immerses students in diverse cultures while honing grammar and vocabulary skills for reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

In the Spanish department, we focus on equipping students to fluently communicate in both Spanish and English, enabling them to connect with 80% of the world's population. Our curriculum emphasises oral communication, cultural understanding, and global citizenship in order to cultivate a deep appreciation for diverse cultures, open doors to international opportunities, and develop a global mindset in our students.

Spanish, with over 460 million native speakers, is a globally relevant language. Being fluent in both Spanish and English will not only offer career advantages, but will also help you to become a confident communicator in your native tongue. Language learning also enhances memory retention, cognitive skills and problem solving, helping you to reach your goals independently of what your career path looks like.

What will you study in KS3?

In KS3, we start from the very basics to ensure that everyone, regardless of prior Spanish experience, begins their learning journey from the same starting point. We delve into essential aspects of the Spanish language, including pronunciation and the ability to answer basic questions about yourself, such as your age, name, and birthday. As we progress, we explore topics that are not only foundational but also relevant to your everyday life, including discussions about your family, pets, school, and food. Our approach is designed to make your learning experience engaging and relatable.

What will you study in KS4?

In KS4, we build upon the foundation established in KS3, diving deeper into the topics you've already explored. Here, we introduce more advanced concepts and exam skills, preparing you comprehensively for the GCSE Spanish exam. Our goal is to ensure that you are well-equipped to excel in this crucial examination.

Our overarching vision is to make you not only proficient but fluent in Spanish. We emphasise both oral and written communication skills, enabling you to express yourself effectively in real-life situations. Throughout the five-year course, you will develop all aspects of language proficiency, including reading, listening, speaking, writing, and translation. At King’s, we are committed to providing you with a well-rounded and enriching Spanish education that prepares you not only for academic success but also for the practical application of Spanish in your future endeavours.
