Why Study Sport ?

At King's Leadership Academy, the PE Department believes in allowing students to become a student athlete. Our aim is to provide students with the opportunity to develop the skill set to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and to give students the opportunity to engage in competitive sporting opportunities. When students leave King’s we hope that students will have a range of knowledge and understanding to be able to access sport in the local community, to be able to lead a healthy active lifestyle independently through physical fitness activity and to have the confidence in their skill set to participate in outdoor adventurous activity.

What Will You Study at KS3?

In key stage 3, we believe in preparing our students to become successful sporting athletes and also developing the knowledge and skills to be able to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Students develop their fundamental motor skills to allow them to access the range of sports that we offer at King's. Students will participate in rugby/football, lacrosse, netball/basketball, dance/gymnastics, rounders/cricket and athletics. We will equip students with the core fundamental skills to allow them to access and transfer skills across the variety of activities. Students will also deepen their understanding of how to live a healthy active lifestyle, looking at a wide range of theoretical concepts such as the long term benefits of participating in physical activity, the basic understanding of the biomechanics of movements and the key components of fitness required for success within sport. Students will also look further into the tactical and strategic aspects of PE and sport and analyse how we can use the skills to develop to successfully outwit our opponents and to be successful. In addition, we develop the students' knowledge of the rules and regulation of sport to enable our students to be able to access physical activity and sport outside the curriculum and encourage a love of sporting activity. Students will learn to transfer all the above key concepts across the curriculum to allow for a complete learning experience and the ability to succeed in a variety of different sports specialisms and become an all rounded student athlete.

What Will You Study at KS4?

In key stage 4 we prepare our students to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to be able to develop their love of PE and also develop their lifelong participation in sport. Students will continue to grow in their sporting journey at King's and the focus will become more on the strategic and tactical aspect of sport with a focus on conditioned practices and opportunities to play sport in the full context. Students are also introduced to additional sports such as badminton and health related fitness. Alongside this students will also start to focus on the academic journey within BTEC sport. Students will develop their prior knowledge developed in key stages of components of fitness and how to lead a healthy active lifestyle. Students will further their understanding by understanding the wider sector of sporting activity, physical fitness activity and outdoor adventure activity. We will focus on how sport can be adapted for all and how society provides sporting opportunities for the local community. Students will deepen their understanding of the key principles of training, particularly focusing on how we can test and develop sporting components of fitness to allow for success within specific activities. Motivational concepts will be discussed and applied to particular scenarios.

Extra curricular activities

At King's we believe in providing the students the opportunities to represent the school in local and national sporting competitions. Students of all abilities are given the opportunities to widen their experience and also compete against local schools and within national competitions. This is key to developing the all rounded student athlete. Students will have the opportunity to participate in football, rugby, netball, dance, basketball, fencing, jujitsu, athletics plus many more.

Carers in sport

Through the opportunities provided to our students, they will be able to take the key concepts and study these further in higher education and go on to have an enriching career within the world of sport. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their theoretical understanding of the human body to be successful in careers, such as physiotherapy. They will be able to use their knowledge of motivational concepts and the mind in sport to become leading sports psychologists and have the tactical and strategic understanding of sports to coach within the local community and national sporting programs.
