King’s Warrington students appear live on BBC Breakfast

Year 8 and Year 9 students from King’s Leadership Academy Warrington were recently invited to attend Salford’s BBC studios and were interviewed live on BBC Breakfast by presenter Sally Nugent and Olympic gold medallist Sam Quek.

The academy was asked to contribute to the BBC’s feature on the House of Commons document entitled ‘Health Barriers for Girls and Women in Sport.’ This report highlights several crucial aspects related to female participation in sports and identifies barriers that need to be addressed. For example, research has shown that many young women drop out of PE due to concerns around sports kits, and that females suffer disproportionally high rates of ACL injuries.

Accompanied by PE Teacher Chloe Green, the students headed to Salford Quays and were interviewed on the football/3G pitch next to the BBC studios. They were asked what they thought of their PE kit and football team kit, and if there was anything they would change. Chloe was also asked about the kit and how the academy has tried to promote engagement and make sport more inclusive for female students.

This visit was a fantastic confidence-boosting opportunity for the students, and a chance for King’s Warrington to make a positive contribution to an important and topical issue.
